Please note that in WA it is not illegal to park on the land called the Verge. If you have the permission of the owner of the adjacent property. Generally, cars are actively encouraged to park on the verge - because in WA , 'Cars rule'. If you dare to park on the (massively wide) road, you are taunted and harassed for 'slowing down the traffic flow'. !!

Yes, WA is the exception. It is in your state laws to allow councils to make exceptions.

In other states it becomes a question of whether councils enforce the law.

The council the current petition is using as an example says it won't enforce the rules on narrow roads if there is no safe place to park - however people want to interpret that.

We're not far behind the "cars rule" mindset and there is a lot of pressure for verge parking. It's really damaging for the street trees so there must be battles within councils between the people are trying to increase urban forests for shade and cooling, and the car people.

Thanks for the tips on how to look after our street trees. I have two and am about to put a ring of mulch around them both to help them thrive. Stage 2 will be some additional native plantings. Here's to increasing our street tree canopy!
