I am the first in my street to create a verge garden with the view to re-introducing habitat and street cooling intentionally. From this has grown East Gippsland Verge Gardens and a wealth of new friends to share ideas and actions. thanks Gayle for leading the way practically and methodically putting together this model of verge gardening.

Hi, I removed all the grass and weeds from my verge many years ago and planted three agonis flexuosa ( weeping peppermints) native to this area. Now matured. Mulched the whole area, planted rescue Zamia palm and other endemic shrubs. It is a beautiful shady and cool place that links my front yard to the verge into a harmonious whole. The water hungry lawn front lawn is goneand in its place we have our veg patch

Best use for an unused front yard I could think of. We don't use them so plant em I reckon.

Have any neighbours followed your lead?

Yes, just one but I get a lot of positive comments from pedestrian traffic

I will be the first on my street in Wynnum when I return to Brisbane in 2025. It's a long street so hopefully, by working with my immediate neighbour, we will inspire others to plant out and eventually create a long paddock that connects us all.

Yes, having that second one next door will make a big difference. It takes a bit of courage to stick your neck out and be the first but the second person is just as important for changemaking. Maybe even more important. This video is famous in change-making circes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW8amMCVAJQ
